Chapter 76

That water mana forming was actually really hard. Like, I-received-the-five-percent-warning hard. But it was necessary to move this along. I need to try to heal the child and go home. I cannot stay here forever. And as always when we spend time apart, I miss Aria.

Cymorae guides me to what I would call a hallway in the coral and brings me to one of the little entrances in it. There, in a tiny coral room barely big enough for a bed and four people, lies a young woman who looks a lot like her mother. She is floating just above the bed, which is clearly a magica construct of some kind because it is glowing white and gold and I can feel the mana coming off it.

The young woman looks just under Aria’s age. Unfortunately, she appears quite ill. There is swelling on much of her body and her color, instead of the aqua blue-blue of her mother, is dark green-gray with occasional angry patches of red. Cymorae’s eldest is very sick.

I look at Cymorae and ask, “May I touch her?”

She nods.

I reach out to lay my hand on her arm when another fishkin woman in a tight, light green shirt and long skirt comes swimming in squeaking and clicking loudly and charges at me. I react by driving myself backwards by pushing on the bed. Cymorae darts quickly in between us and gives back to the woman everything she said on the way in and more.

I hear in my mind, “I’ll handle her. You go ahead and try to heal Crimtera.”

I swim back to the bed and touch her shoulder. I can hear the volume of the argument reach an even higher pitch.

I send life mana into this poor young fishkin and listen as it tells me she is dying. There is a toxin in her blood that slowly disables the nerves over the period of a few days. This must be a paralyzing agent the squid uses to stop its prey from fighting its way free. I ask the life magica to help the nerves, and it sounds joyous in response to being asked to fulfill its purpose.

Just as the mana approaches the nerve, the toxin reacts and contracts around the nerve, not letting anything near. Her body begins to twitch, and I back the life magica off.

[Cymorae, I need to speak with you.]

She glares at the woman in light green, gives an exceptionally loud squeak, and points at the doorway. The other woman brings both her hands down in a thrusting gesture that signifies fury, turns around, and swims out.

Cymorae swims over to me and looks with a mix of pleading, desperation, and hope.

[Cymorae, how familiar are you with this toxin?]

“Not very. I know it kills every time.”

I nod.

[I’ll try to explain. It attacks the nerves themselves and attempts to shut them down. Without the nerves to control things, the body begins to fail and even attack itself. The creature likely uses this to subdue prey.
